Ireland to choose life or death for unborn children at polls

Today Ireland will make a life and death decision in an abortion referendum that could see the countries strict ban on abortion overturned.

Polling stations close at 9pm GMT today, 25 May 2018. Results are expected to be announced early Saturday morning.

Ireland has had strict laws prohibiting the practice of abortion since 1983 when an amendment was made to the constitution which effectively outlawed abortion in all cases without exception.

The vote has caused widespread debate on the moral issues surrounding abortion.
